ATLAS provides the ability to tame wild animals and pet or domesticate them.
Most of the creatures in Atlas are tamable via either the passive or bola methods (described below).
Dragons can only be tamed for a limited period of time using a tame token which can be purchased from a Merchant Ship for 40,000 gold.
You cannot tame on Freeport servers.

Passive Taming
Place the required item in the last slot of your toolbar. Feed the animal by pressing the action button while standing close enough for the feed prompt to appear. When the Bar at the bottom of the name plate fills to 100% the animal is tamed and you may name them.
Bola Taming
The animal must be damaged to below 20%, then a Bola will be able to be used on Animal. When the Animal is Bola'ed they will be knocked to the ground. You will need to approach the mouth of the animal and feed it it's favorite food. Animals will attack if you are too close, but you need to be close to the mouth to get the option to feed it, try crouching or proneing to reduce your aggro visibility. Repeat damaging and trapping with the Bola—then feeding—until the animal's tame meter is full. When the Bar at the bottom of the name plate fills to 100% the animal is tamed and you may name them.
Too long of a gap between feedings, and the taming progress starts to decline. This is indicated by the feeding dialog switching to red lettering.
It seems to be best to approach the animal from the back in order to feed it. There is a "sweet spot" where you probably can't be hit by the attack. But terrain or structures can make this approach difficult.
Bola Taming Tip
Build a "taming trap" (see gallery) using Small Wood Gateway, Wood Fence Support, and Wood Wall with windows. After you get the animal in the trap, you can let its taming meter reset to zero while you stock up and prepare. Using a shield to approach the creature while it is bound can cancel or mitigate the damage of their attack, allowing you to get in there and feed it. Be fully fed and hydrated, with a large supply of bolas. Because this is going to take a long time and be very difficult. And have someone watch your back and deal with the roaming predators as you work.
For both types of taming, be aware that you can pick up and carry animals that are unconscious, although they can be very heavy. This can be a boon if you need to get either a passive or hostile tame candidate into a corral and away from roving predators.
Level Gain on Taming
When you successfully tame a creature, it immediately gets a bonus to its wild level. The best bonus (at 99.9% taming efficiency) is an additional 50% to its currently level, rounded down. So a Level 5 cow tamed perfectly will start its career with its new master at level 7. From there the creature can earn experience and gain additional levels, just like the player characters and ships.
Maximum Tame Level
Every Tame can get a minimum of 30 tame level-ups put into it, plus however many base levels it had when wild. So for example, a level 5 post-tame wolf would get 35 tame level-ups to apply, whereas a level 40 post-tame wolf would get 70 tame level-ups to use. Formula: Maximum Tame Level = (Wild Level + Taming Proficiency) + (Post Tame Minimum Level 30 )
Currently Max Wild found is level 60. So 120 is the current max level at perfect tame. (60 Wild + 30 Bonus Taming Proficiency) + 30 Minimum Levels = 120.
