Salt is a resource category that includes Flake Salt, Iodine, Kala Namak, Pink Salt, Rock Salt and Sea Salt; is used in a large number of meals; is required for preservation of food goods and is required to make Cobalt Ingots in a Forge.
The most common way to find salt early game is to dig sandy beaches with a Shovel. Your success will depend on random luck, but may pay off with 1-4 salt every now and again.
Desert climates can spawn salt nodes harvestable with a pickaxe or hatchet, see for example Flake Salt.
