Taming[ | ]
Bola tamed with earthworms. If you do not have access to earthworms, however, you can use Berry. Be aware that the taming time will be much longer compared to the earthworms.
A useful method for taming is using a cage and grappling hook. Place a cage near your desired tame and grappling hook it when it lands. Use the grappling hook's to drag the crow to where you're walking. Walk behind the cage and pull the crow inside, then unhook the grappling hook and run inside. Use a spyglass to hit the crow until it's low enough to bola, then feed as normal. When the tame is almost free, use the grappling hook on it again. This will cause the crow to be immediately grounded upon waking up, preventing it from glitching through the cage and freeing itself. Simply repeat the spyglass / bola process until tamed. If you are unable to place a Cage in the area but have another player nearby, have one player grapple while the other hits with the spyglass and bolas the crow. The grapple will prevent it from flying off. Keep in mind that the grappling hook will only last for a certain length of time, so be prepared to grapple again if you need to drag it a long distance to your cage.
An easier method, and one that actually works on PvE servers, is to damage the crow and lead it to an area out of range of enemy foundations where you can place a structure. Then continue to damage it until its health is in the red and it is circling crazily over your head and Bola it. If it flies away before then just stand still and wait for it to return, then spin up the bola, aim slightly above its head, and release the bola once it's 20 or 30 meters from you. Once the bird is on the ground, place a Wood Fence Support, four Thatch Walls (one with a doorway in it), a Thatch Ceiling (place after the first wall and then hang the last three walls down from it) and a Thatch Door. Then climb inside with the trapped bird and tame it in safety and within the comforts of your little taming hut. Once you're done politely demolish the structure and enjoy your new super-smart-ifying pet.
Bonus Inteligence
Utility[ | ]
Crows are a shoulder pet that grants a boost to Intelligence. A level 1 Crow gives your Intelligence a +10.4% boost. A level-capped (130+) Crow gives your Intelligence a +60% boost.
They dramatically slow falling and reduce fall damage when on a player's shoulder. (Tested on a fall that dealt 110 damage without one and 2 damage with.) NOTE: This is no longer the case at least as of v207.8. Since no one has thus far reported seeing patch notes about this, we do not know if it is a bug or a feature.
Breeding[ | ]
You can breed Crows in the following biomes: Eastern Tropics, Western Temperate, Eastern Temperate, Eastern Tundra, Western Tundra, Polar, High Desert and Low Desert. Acceptable temperatures for mating and offspring are between 15-33°C (59-91°F). Your newborn Crow will be ready for you to claim it after 60 minutes and you will need to keep the egg extra warm until then, between 32-43°C (90-109°F).
Feeding Baby[]
It will eat from its inventory one Chili (or similar food) about every 90 seconds. A newborn can only carry enough weight to hold a few units of food so you won't be able leave for very long between feedings. Once it can hold more, each full stack should give you 2 hours and 30 minutes away from baby. Tested with berries, non-Vit A source, and it works fine too if chili's aren't available.
About 2 hours and 30 minutes after the baby is born, the maturation meter will reach 10% and the baby will become a juvenile. After that point, the young Crow will better handle temperature swings and it will be able to eat from a Feeding Trough, allowing you to leave it alone for longer periods of time.
Keeping Baby Comfortable[]
When possible, arrange to raise the baby someplace that won't stay too far above its comfortable temperature range for too much of the day. It is easier to heat an area than it is to cool it, so keep that in mind when setting up your nursery for each species you breed.
To keep the baby warm enough, have plenty of Wood Wall Hooks with Torches in them mounted around the floors and walls in the fully enclosed area where you will be raising the baby. Maybe also install a Lever set to the same PIN as the hooks so you can trigger them all at once if you like. This will help you keep your young pets alive during any cold spells.
If you need to cool the area, you will need to use Ice Boxes. To power them, you will need to have visited a frigid region ahead of time and stockpiled enough Ice to keep the boxes active until the heatwave passes.
Imprinting[]
Beyond the initial imprint when you claimed your newborn, you can also gain a very useful imprint bonus by cuddling with your new friend. The cuddle timer ("Wants Care In" timer) is eight hours. Cuddling or taking a walk with it as soon as possible each time the timer elapses will increase your new Crow's stats. It will also provide a nice rider buff once you can saddle it as an adult.
A 100% imprint will give an additional 30% damage and defence bonus while the pathfinder that imprinted on the animal is riding it. If you can't arrange to increase the imprint every eight hours, don't despair. You'll still get a bonus based on whatever imprint bonus you did get while raising your new little friend. For example, a 50% imprint bonus will still get you 15% more damage and defense; it's not an all-or-nothing thing.
Notes On Timing[]
Successfully raising a high-imprint offspring—or even just keeping your new buddy alive at all—can take quite a bit of time and good scheduling. So here is a rundown of the relevant times to be mindful of:
- Mating time: 2 minutes
- Gestation Time: 5 hours 45 Minutes
- Baby feeding every 1 min 50 seconds
- cuddle interval: 8 hours
- 0.1% maturation = 143 seconds
on OFFICIAL Servers:
to 10% approx 4 hrs
Combat[ | ]
Long weapons like spears and pikes work well against crows; Giraffes do extremely well against them.
