Domestication

The bear is a very useful tame. It can collect high amounts of fiber with its alternate attack, it has a naturally high weight capacity, and it is very fast once it gets up to speed and as long as it doesn't run into anything, fall from anything or receive a knockback attack. Additionally, the bear can tow the cargo saddle or the carriage. The cargo saddle is a mobile cannon or mortar, and the carriage is a vehicle for up to 6 people.

Taming

Tier 2 Taming is required to tame a bear. Bears are tamed with the Bola method:

  • Reduce the bear's health below 10% or to "red" status
  • Hit the bear with a bola to trap it
  • Nestle your pathfinder next to its belly behind it's elbow and facing its mouth to safely feed it with Honey Honey, Vegetables, or Fruits - in order of preference. CAUTION: Bear can attack you while feeding it if you approach too close to its face.
  • The bola will break, releasing the bear every 90 seconds
  • Repeat as needed until the tame is successful

Utility

Using the bear's alternate (right-click) attack gathers large amounts of fiber and berries from bushes around you. Additionally, the bear gains speed while moving without tripping (such as on rocks or ledges) up to a fairly high maximum speed. This speed gain remains the same even if it is nearly, but just less than, encumbered—making transport of masses of materials more efficient.

Breeding

You can Breed bears in the following biomes: Eastern Tropics, Western Temperate, Eastern Temperate, Eastern Tundra, Western Tundra, Polar.

Acceptable temperatures for Bear mating and offspring are between 7-25°C (45-77°F).

Gestation takes four hours and the time between cuddles is eight hours.
